Support for the Plant-Based Treaty

As part of my commitment to addressing the climate crisis and promoting sustainability, I support the Plant-Based Treaty, which positions food systems at the forefront of environmental action. This treaty aims to halt the degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture, promote healthier and more sustainable plant-based diets, and work towards reversing the damage inflicted on our planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity.

Modeled after the Fossil Fuel Treaty, the Plant-Based Treaty outlines three essential demands:

  1. Relinquish: I believe we must cease the expansion of animal agriculture, including halting deforestation, preventing the establishment of new farms and slaughterhouses, and safeguarding indigenous lands.

  2. Redirect: I emphasize the importance of promoting plant-based foods, declaring climate and methane emergencies, supporting small farmers, updating dietary guidelines, and redirecting subsides away from animal agriculture towards sustainable practices.

  3. Restore: I advocate for focusing on reforesting and rewilding degraded ecosystems, protecting vital carbon sinks such as oceans and mangroves, and subsidizing regenerative agricultural practices.

The Plant-Based Treaty encourages cities, businesses, individuals, and organizations to endorse and implement its principles within their own spheres of influence. While not legally binding, it serves as a catalyst for a global shift towards plant-based food systems as a key solution to the climate crisis. By supporting this treaty, I aim to work together with the community to create a healthier planet for future generations.
